ABSTRACT
In spite of the importance of Pelvic Floor Exercises (PFE) as an
intervention for stress incontinence, PFE has not been implemented as a
routine procedure of care in any antenatal clinics throughout Brunei
Darussalam.
Limitations such as lack of skills and knowledge on evidence based
research, and also, lack of support play a major role for PFE not
professionally utilized.
Therefore, in this extended project, several studies were reviewed to
examine the effectiveness of pelvic floor exercises during childbirth. This
will provide evidence based literature on PFE thus prepare the midwives
with adequate and appropriate knowledge for the successful implementation
of this procedure as a routine midwifery care. Some recommendations were
also drawn from the studies which can be used as a guide throughout the
proses of implementation.
Though PFE was not practically and academically taught in Brunei’s College
of Nursing, both providing information and instruction on the antenatal
basis should be neither neglected nor unimplemented. Thus, it is important
to emphasize the role of the midwife as a health promoter ensuring all
women receive quality verbal information and instruction on PFE through
the implementation of it as a routine midwifery care.
